    Kansas - Nebraska Act
    The Union and the Confederates wanted to choose the view on slavery for the uncontrolled territories. To settle the dispute over which territories would be part of what congress passed an act allowing the Kansas and Nebraska territories to decide wether or not they want to have slaves or not.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott Decision
    When presented with a case involving a slave the supreme court made a very controversial decision. They said that slaves were not considered citizens of the US and as a result of this they cannot sue for rights.
  • Secession Convention of 1861

    Contrary to the beliefs of Sam Houston many Texans belived that the election of Abraham Lincoln would prove to be the demise of the United States. Sam Houston was more willing to become an independent republic than to join the Confederacy. A convention was called on January 28th, 18618 to settle the dispute.

    Texas seceds from the union after the convention of secession. The convention favored secession with a vote of 166 to 8.

    Lincoln makes the last part of his journey of speeches and parades as he arrives in Washington D.C. However he feels a small pang of regret, for he had only made a brief stop in Baltimore. This unscheduled getaway was due to the belief that there was danger of an assassination in Baltimore.

    13th Amendment Proposed
    Due to recent events involving conflicts over slavery congress proposed an amendment that states that unless it is punishment for a crime nobody is allowed to make someone a slave or do involuntary labor.
