Slavery and the Events Leading up to the Civil War

  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
The Missouri Compromise is about how Missouri had applied to come into statehood. Also whether it will become a free or a slave state, Maine would be doing the same. The main points are how James Tallmadge proposed that slaves would be freed after they become of age, the age of 25. His plan didn’t go by the Senate although the house agreed to it.

Instead of using Tallmadge's proposal Congress decided on a two part compromise. This compromise allowed Missouri to earn its statehood as a slave state, also allowing Maine to join as a free state. Due to the adding of the two “states” the Senate was balanced, twelve on each the slave and free states. It also created the 36’ 30’ line or the Louisiana Territory. On March 3, 1820 congress passed this compromise.

This would keep the power between congress of slave and free states equal. This also created the 36' 30 line. • Underground Railroad

The Underground Railroad was not a real railroad but people kind of used it as one. Slaves used this to get to freedom. They would be guided by conductors leading them to safe houses with stationmasters. The free land they were traveling to was Canada, they would traveling through swamps or the appalachian mountains. When they traveled through the mountains they would sleep in caves. They only went through the swamp because dogs lost scent when they were near water.
