    By the middle of the 19th century the American Civil War took place dividing our nation between the north and the south. A big reason for the war was the Norths movement to eliminate slavery and the South wanting slavery to continue.

    On December 6th 1865 slavery offically ended when the 13th Amendment of the Constitution was ratfied.

    Although our country still struggles with race issues we have made so much progress since the beginning of slavery. Slavery no longer exisits, segregation does not exist, and there are equal rights for all. We even have our first black president. We have over come so much since the beginning.
