    Slavery Timeline

  • The Missouri Compromise

The Missouri Compromise admitted Maine as a free state and Missouri as a slave state. This effected the slaves by having the free blacks in Missouri become slaves, and the slaves that were already in Maine become free.
  • Formation of the Free-Soil Party

A party to voice the views of politicians who wanted slavery to be abolished and the new territories to remain free states. This effected the slaves by helping the free states remain free instead of the free blacks there becoming slaves.
  • The Compromise of 1850

A series of 5 bills; it's goals was to deal with the spread of slavery to the territories in order to keep the northern and southern interests in balance. This impacted the slaves by abolishing the slave trade in the District of Columbia. Also, the citizens in New Mexico and Utah were able to vote whether they wanted slaves or not. California was also entered as a free state.
  • The Kansas-Nebraska Act

A bill in 1854 that allowed settlers of the territory to decide whether slavery would be allowed in the state's borders. This impacted the slaves because if the settlers in the state didn't like the idea of slaves, then the slaves would have nothing to worry about, but if the settlers did want slaves, then the slaves would most likely to continue to be slaves.
