Geocities
Geocities is a service that allowed users to create their own personal home page service. It went public in 1998 and one year later was bought by Yahoo! for 3.57 BIllion dollars. -
Blog, Chat, List
Social Media took large strides in 1997. The Web reached one million sites, blogging begins, AOL Instants messenger allows users to chat with each other, and SixDegrees.com allows users to create profiles and friends lists. The online course management system, still used today, Blackboard is founded. -
Friendster
Social networking site Friendster is launched but ultimately declines after 2008 with the rising popularity of other sites that mimiced thenselves after it. -
Myspace
Myspace is a social networking site launched as a clone of Friendster. Users were able to use HTML to create their own unique pages and effcts.
LinkedIn is started as a business oriented social networking site, and the virtual world Second Life is born. -
Facebook
Initially launched exclusively for Harvard students to network, it became available to 800 colleges by 2005. By 2006, it was opened to all users 13 and over.
Flickr image hosting website is opened. It allows users to share, view and comment on others photos. -
Twitter
Twitter is a text based social media service, known as "Tweets", use a maximum of 140 characters to communicate. It is instant and constant steaming. Very popular with celebrities os their fans can "follow" what they are doing. -
Google +
Google creates their own social media site called Google Plus. In two weeks, the closed beta trial had more then ten million people. Pinterest is introduced. It is an online bulletin board allowing the user to share of crafts, styles, and designs with friends by "pinning." Instagram becomes a popular mobile photo blog with many differnt photo effcts.
