    In November of 1957 the Soviate Union whaned to see if a living animal could survive in space. So, the sent Laika the dog. She lived for seven days. The scientests couldn't find a way to bring her back so they put her to sleep with gasses. Sputnik 2 crashed in April of 1958. teacher.scholastic.com

    On July 20,1969 Neil Armstrong, Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin, and Michael Collins launch with one target in mind that if they succseed they would end the space race. That target was the moon. They reached their destination and made history as Neil Armstrong took the first step onto the moon saying," ...one small step for man; one giant leap for mankind." At this time he planted the American Flag on the surface of the moon (apparently he was a multi-tasker). nasa.gov
