They got on safely. This mission was dedicated to the department of defense.
  • Space Shuttle 1986

    Space Shuttle 1986
Only 2 missions were sent in this year. The STS-61C AND 51L. The STS 61C launching was set back 1 day because it needed additional time to close the orbiter aft compartment. Then they ateempted to do a launching, but a solid rocket booster hydraulic power unit was exceeding the RPM redline speed limits. After 18 days, they tried again. Again, it was stopped because approximatly 4,000 pounds of liquid exygen was leaking from an external tank. Then it was setback two days because of rain.
  • Space Shuttle 1988

    Space Shuttle 1988

However, three of 44 orbiter Reaction Control System (RCS) thrusters -- small firing jets used for on-orbit maneuvering -- sprang leaks prior to rendezvous. Shortly after main engine cutoff, two leaks occurred in aft primary thrusters. Third leak occurred later in flight, but the crew was able to fix it.
