    Columbus

    Columbus
    Coumbus finally got the funding he needed to find a water route to Asia by going west, by Queen Isabella of Spain, after searching almost all of Europe. He was originally from Italy. Columbus did not find the waterway, but did spark exploration by exaggerating what he found in the new world. He discovered the Bahamas, and Cuba, but he never saw what is now North America.

    Pineda
    Pineda's first voyage was dedicated to mapping the Florida to Texas coast. It was important because it led other explorers toward the region.

    Cortes

    Cortes
    Cortes was one of the explorers sent after Coumbus to explore more of the new world. He was in search of God, Gold, and Glory. He conquered the Astecs.

    De Vaca part 1

    The leader, Narvaes was originally sent to explore the region the Pineda had mapped. However they had a mis-communication about the meeting spot, and the explorers were left at Florida. They built rafts of what they could find and tried to fail back to Cuba, but the got caught in a storm and drifted to what is now Galveston.

    De Vaca part 2

    De Vaca found Texas while trying to return to Cuba. He encountered the Jumano, Coahulitechan, and the Karnkawa. He was there for 8 years

    Fray Marcos and Esteban

    The purpose of their journey was to discover the seven cities of gold, which turned out to be false. Esteban had been assigned medicine man by the gulf tribes, and thought the rules still applied in the new area, but he was wrong and got killed. Fray Marcos reported "no gold, harsh land, mean indians"

    Coronado

    Coronado was first looking for Cibola, and found the Turk who told of a city of gold. Everything was gold. the city was run by Amazon women, and was named Quivera. The story turned out to be a myth and the Turk was brutaly murdered. They ended up finding an adobe village which was actually fools gold. The importance of his journey was that he gave a bad report and stopped exploration.
  • Jan 1, 1543

    Moscoso

    Hernando De Soto was the leader of the expedition. He died of fever in Louisiana. They are given credit for discovering the mississippi river.
