    The history of the study of speech, language, and those related disorders and impairments can be divided into periods. The beginnings of the speech profession can date back to 1925 when organizations were established for those working in the field of speech disorders and speech corrections.
  • The “Processing Period”

    From 1945 to 1965, many speech assessments and therapy approaches began to appear in attempts “to improve the internal psychological processing underlying communication disorders
  • The “Linguistic Era”

    Starting around 1965 and continuing to 1975, language disorders began to be treated as separate from speech disorders and these language disorders were decided more linguistic in nature
  • The “Pragmatics Revolution”

    From 1975 until 2000, professionals in the field began to rethink and reframe speech and language practices “to include communicative, linguistic, cultural and everyday-life contexts”
