  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
The Missouri Compromise kept the balance between the slave and free states in the senate. I think that the Missouri Compromise help delay the Civil War by bringing a little peace between the two sides for a while.
  • Nathaniel Turner's Rebellion

    Nathaniel Turner's Rebellion
Nat Turner belived that an eclips of the sun was a sign from God that he needed to kill his enimies. He and 6 others killed their slaveholder's family and other whites. They were caught and executed though everyone feared it would happen again. I think this would have scared some whites into thinking that they should "loosen up" on slavery. picture: sites.uci.edu
  • Wilmot Privoso

    Wilmot Privoso
The Wilmot Proviso was introduced by David Wilmot, saying that any land gained from Mexico, from the Mexican war, would ban slavery. This stired up a lot of debate, but was never passed. I think the Wilmont Proviso help the start of the Civil War, because it stired up so much debate. picture: education-portal.com

The fight between the North and the South may have made them even more angry at each other but again was calmed by the comprmise. Picture: www.ushistory.org
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    Fugitive Slave Act
Passed in 1850 as part of the Compromise of 1850. This act required everyone to help catch any fugitive slaves and it you were to be caugh helping a slave you would be fined or thrown into prison. Southerners believed this forced Northerners to recognize Southern rights, but it made more Northerners think that slavery was evil. I think that this made the Northerens angry and push they more towards war. picture: www.history.com
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
Henery Clay gave the idea that California should enter as a free state, the rest of the new terriroties should have no limit on slavery, slave trade would be banned in Washinton DC. and they would in forced fugitive slave law even more. The North and the SOuth statred a big debate over this but later, Senator Stephen A. Dounglas divided Clays plan and let Congress vote on evh one seperatly. Only five of these bills became laws.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Kansas-Nebraska Act
Stephen A. Douglas proposed adding Kansas and Nebraska as new states, but at the location where they were, because of the Missouri Compromise, they wolud have been free states, so Douglas proposed that they stop using the Missouri Compromise and let the settlers in Kansas and Nebraska vote fro slave or free state. This cause disput between the North and South, because the Northerners protested against the act but the Southerners wanted it.
  • "Bleeding Kansas"

    "Bleeding Kansas"
In May 1856 Lawrence was attacked by 800 slavery supporters. Later antislavery supporters responded with the help of John Brown, an abolishionist who belived he was told to end slavery from God. He lead a group to a creek and killed 5 slavery supporters. Later federal troops were sent to end the bloodshed. picture: www.examiner.com
  • The Dred-Scott Case - Continued

The republicans and antislavery supporters were furious and said the case was "a wicked and false judgment" and "the greatest crime." This case divided the country even farther a part. The war was coming even closer because of this desision made by the court. Many people disagreed and many agreed.
  • The Dred-Scott Case

    The Dred-Scott Case
Dred Scott, an enslaved African American, was owned by a family who moved to the North, where slavery was prohibited. Later Scotts owner died. In 1846 Scott and some antislavery lawyers sued for his freedom. He claimed he should be free becasue he live in a place where slavery was not allowed. 11 years later the the case reached the Supreme Court. The court decided that Scott was still an enslaved person and that he had no right to start a lawsuit. picture: www.pbs.org
  • John Brown's Raid on Harper's Ferry

John Brown's Raid on Harper's Ferry
John Brown, and abolishionist, lead a group to capture an arsenel located on Harper's Ferry, to arm enslaved African Americans. The plan did not work and was stopped, later Brown was hung for treason and murder. I belive the abolishionists and other antislave supporters would have been angered when they heard this news. The Southerners were scared that Browns actions would inspire others to do things like he did. picture: www.lva.virginia.gov
  • Lincoln's Election

    Lincoln's Election
Abraham Lincoln was nominated by the Republicans, saying that slavery should remain untouched where it was but should not be permitted in territories. Because the Democrates were divieded between Stephen Douglas, John C. Breckinridge, and John Bell, Lincoln won with the majority of the votes. The South did not trust the Republicans to protect their right. The North and he South were even more divided because of the fact parts of the South were starting to secede picture: abrahamlincolnscla
  • Battle at Fort Sumter

    Battle at Fort Sumter
By now 11 states had already seceded. There still forts and military instillations belonging to America, but the seceded states had capuured, including one called Fort Sumter. Lincoln got a letter from South Carolina's Governor demanding supplies. Lincoln responded saying he was sending supplies with and unarmed group but that if the Confederates began to shoot they were to fire back. The Confederates made the choice to fire before the Union supplies had arrived.
  • Battle of Fort Sumter - Continued

High seas kept Union ships from getting to the fort. Fort Sumter surrendered two day later on April 14. Shots were fired but no one was killed. This was the start of the Civil War. If this Battle would have never started the Civil War might have never begun, therefore we migh still be split today and be a country with one side for slavery and one said against. picture: en.wikipedia.org
