Steve's Birth
Steve was born in a small hospital in Quebec City. In Erikson's first stage, trust versus mistrust, Steve experienced the world for the first time. In this stage of life parents play a major role in their child's first stage since their love towards him will be a big factor in their child's development. If they give him love, he will move to the next stage trusting the world and without fear. If they neglect Steve and if he is not well-loved, he will doubt that life will be rewarding. -
Moving Day
Steve (age 15) and his perents moved to Montreal and Steve had to go to a new school. Erikson's stage 5, identity versus identity confusion, implies that Steve will have to develop his own identity. This new chapter of his life will be a major factor in solidifying his identity and personality as he will meet new people and live different experiences or this stage of his life will create confusion as he loses himself in this big changes. -
First Girlfriend
Steve (age 20) went to university where he met his first girlfriend. For the first time in his life, he is in an intimate relationship. This brings up Erikson's stage 6, intimacy versus isolation, as Steve will have to make himself vulnerable for the first time. This will challenge his identity because if he cannot deal with this relationship and this new person in his life, he will end up isolated. -
Bad News
Steve (age 70) learned that he has an incurable cancer and that he only has a couple more weeks to live. As mentionned in Erikson's stage 8, ego integrity versus despair, Steve will have to reflect on his journey and all the experiences that he faced along the way. If he does it with a positive attitude, he will find closure and will accept his destiny. If not, he will have regrets and feel despair, as he will wish for a better life and a better ending.
