    Stokely Carmichael was born on June 29th, 1941 in Port of Spain, Trinidad.

    Stokely left Trinidad and went to New York to live with his parents.
  • Freedom Rides

    Freedom Rides
    At age 19, Stokely participated in the famous Freedom Rides, which was a bus ride from New Orleans to Jackson. Upon exiting in Jackson, the Riders went into an all white cafeteria, were accused of disturbing the peace, and sent to jail. They were placed in Parchman State Prison Farm, where Stokely was the youngest detainee.

    Became 4th Chairman of SNCC
    Stokely was elected the 4th Chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. He helped increase the number of registered black voters.
  • Self-Exile

    Self-Exile
    In 1969, Stokely and his wife left the US and went to Guinea-Conakry. He became an aide to prime minister of Guinea Ahmed Sekou Toure and a student of the exiled Ghanian president Kwame Nkrumah.
  • Name Change

    At this point in his life, Stokely Carmichael changed his name to Kwame Ture to honor the prime minister and the exiled Ghanian president.

    He died of prostate cancer at age 57.
