Pre 1600s
Taiwan was settled in by Malay-Polynesians who called the island Pakan. Then they resettled to the mountains and was known as the 'mountain people'. -

Portuguese Fleet
A Portuguese fleet sails through Taiwan straight, finds Taiwan, says "Ilha Formosa" meaning beauiful island. That becomes Taiwan's name for the next four centuries! -
Dutch Era
Dutch came and wanted to control Taiwan's trading system.
The Dutch's first war was at 1652-1654.
The Dutchs second war was at 1665-1667
The third war of Dutch was when the dutch came back at 1664 and they they built a fortress in the middle of Taiwan.
The Dutch defeted the French in 1813. -
The Spanish
The Spanish controlled the northern part of Taiwan because they were such enemies. They built a colony called Spanish Formosa to protect the Spanish and portuguese trade from being interfered by the dutch, and they wanted to rule the whole of Taiwan. -
Ming Dynasty
In 1388 the Ming government abandoned Pescardores.Having to hear the arrival of the Dutch.They immediately sent troops to Penghu island to force the Dutches out of the island.In July 1622,the Dutch tried to claim Penghu island and this time they succeeded!
The Ming Dynasty are also called The Great Ming Empire! -
The Ching Dynasty
The mainland people took over Penghu. Millions of Taiwanese people were forced to leave Taiwan, and go to China to work. -
Japanese Era
The Japanese people built trains, industries and buildings e.t.c in Taiwan up to the Japanese standards. All these work was by Mr George Kerr and he named it "Formosan Home Rule Movement".
