    The election was between Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr, after the House tied on 35 ballots, the 36th ballot revealed that Jefferson had won.
  • The Louisiana Purchase

    America purchased the Louisiana Territory from France for $15 million.
  • First commercial steamboat

    Robert Fulton created the first commercial steamboat along the Hudson River.
  • The Embargo Act

    The Embargo Act prevented foreign trade.
  • Atlantic Slave Trade Outlawed

    The Atlantic slave trade was outlawed for a few reasons: Britain was outlawing the slave trade and the U.S. did not want to be lower than them in terms of morality, the Haitian Revolution was a scary idea to the U.S. government, and the Haitian Revolution is what allowed the U.S. to purchase Louisiana, this begged the question of what would happen to America's expansion if something similar happened.

    The election was between James Madison and Charles Cotesworth Pickney. Madison won.
  • The Battle of Tippecanoe

    The Battle of Tippecanoe was between the Indians and the Americans. Led by William Henry Harrison, the Americans defeated Tecumseh and won the battle.

    A battle that took place in Alabama against Andrew Jackson and the Muskogee fighters. Jackson won.

    The Treaty of Ghent ended the War of 1812, it solidified America's win.
  • James Monroe elected President

    The election was between the last Federalist candidate, Rufus King, and James Monroe. Monroe won.

    A war between Andrew Jackson and the Spanish. Fought in Florida, Jackson was chasing down runaway slaves and was destroying Spanish territory along the way. Jackson won.
  • The Civilization Fund Act

    An act passed that encouraged the benevolent actions between Americans and the Native Americans, it even encouraged the assimilation of the Indians in American society.
  • The Adams-Onís Treaty

    Jackson persuaded the Spanish to accept the treaty, giving Florida to the United States.
  • The Missouri Compromise

    A compromise that admitted Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state, the compromise also split the Louisiana Territory.
  • Treaty of Doak's Stand

    A treaty signed between the United States and the Choctaw tribe.
  • John Quincy Adams elected President

    The election was between John Quincy Adams and Henry Clay. Adams won.
  • First long-distance railroad

    America's first long-distance railroad was launched out of Maryland.
  • Andrew Jackson is elected President

    The election was between John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson. Jackson won.
  • Tariff of 1828

    A tariff to protect American trade by raising the prices on British imports.
  • The Indian Removal Act

    Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act, which effectively gave the United States some of the Mississippi Indian Territory and forced the Indians to leave their home.
  • Nat Turner's Rebellion

    An uprising of Black slaves killed between 55 to 65 people, at least 51 of which were white.
  • The Black Hawk War

    A short war between the United States and the Native Americans, who were lead by a man named "Black Hawk".

    A revolution fought between the area of Texas and the Spanish, where Texas fought to be considered its own Republic.

    The Treaty of Velasco required that Santa Anna withdraw his forces from Texas soil, and to acknowledge Texas's independence.

    Following the Indian Removal Act passed in 1830, the Indians that were forced to leave their homes had to walk the "Trail of Tears" where most of the Indian population died off.

    The election was between William Henry Harrison and Henry Clay. Harrison won. (Fun Fact: Harrison holds the record for the longest inaugural address, but contracted pneumonia because of it and died after 31 days in office, the shortest ever term.)
  • John Tyler assumes the Presidency

    William Henry Harrison died while in office, leaving his Vice President, John Tyler, to become President.
  • First long-distance telegraph

    Samuel Morse got Congress to fund a 40 mile telegraph line from Washington, D.C. to Baltimore.
  • James K. Polk elected President

    The election was between James K. Polk and Henry Clay. Polk won.

    President Polk declared war on Mexico and the citizens were not happy, affectionately naming it, "Mr. Polk's War".

  • The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo

    The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo marks the end of Mr. Polk's War between America and Mexico.

    The Compromise of 1850 essentially reinstated the Missouri Compromise's ideals.

    Once passed, it required all runaway slaves to be returned to their owners, even if they were in a free state.

    Once passed, it allowed the Union to emancipate the slaves that belonged to the Confederates.

    One of the first battles in the Western Theater. Fought in Tennessee, the Battle of Shiloh is considered one of the most deadliest battles in the Civil War.
  • The Battle of Antietam

    This battle is considered one of the bloodiest battles every recorded. The Confederates retreating, resulting in a not so decisive win for the Union.
  • The Emancipation Proclamation

    Lincoln wrote the proclamation earlier in the year, but was advised to wait until Union victory. After the Battle of Antietam, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. It did not go into effect until January first, 1863.

    The Battle of Chancellorsville was a Confederate victory, but they lost "Stonewall" Jackson, a major Confederate general.

  • Lee surrenders

    General Grant surrounded General Lee at Appomattox Courthouse, which ended all Confederate military operations.
