TR the Rough Rider at San Juan Hill
A group of soldiers called the Roosevelt Rough Riders fought in the Spanish-American War, and were known for their bravery and skills on horses. Many charges towards San Juan were led by these soldiers. -

After the 25th president William McKinley was assassinated, Vice President Theodore Roosevelt was given the presidential seat. He was the youngest president in US history, bringing excitement and power to the presidency. -
TR and the Northern Securities Case
Roosevelt made newspaper headlines as a trustbuster when he ordered the Justice Department to sue the Northern Securities Company, which had established a monopoly over northwestern railroads. -
Coal Strike
In eastern Pennsylvania, the United Mine Workers of America refused to continue working in the coal mines. They demanded higher wages and less work hours due to the mistreatment and danger they faced. -
National Reclamation Act
To ensure water was available to farms and families throughout the country, the National Reclamation Act was put in place. As a result, many dams and irrigation systems were built in areas where water was scarce. -
Elkins Act
To prohibit companies from giving refunds or rebates to businesses that transport huge amounts of goods, the Elkins Act was passed. As a result, the businesses lowered the prices of their goods. -
TR wins first full term as President
TR defeated his democratic challenger Alton B. Parker in the 1904 presidential election. With his victory, Roosevelt became the first president to win a full term after taking the office upon the death of his predecessor. -
Yosemite is under federal control
TR camped in Yosemite Natural Park with naturalist John Muir for three days. On that trip, Muir persuaded Roosevelt to remove control of the nearby valley and grove from California and return it to the federal government. -
Meat Inspection Act
Upton Sinclair's, "The Jungle" exposed the disgusting, dirty conditions of the average meatpacking industry. The Meat Inspection Act was therefore enforced in order to prevent companies from selling rotten or infected meat. -
Pure Food and Drug Act
Like the Meat Inspection Act, this Act was passed in order to make sure that food and medicine sold was in good condition, thus implementing standards and rules for companies to follow. -
TR Leaves Presidency; Visits Africa
After having ended his presidency on March 4, 1909, Roosevelt visited Africa from 1909-1911 to go on the Smithsonian-Roosevelt African Expedition, in which he hunted large animals to be stuffed and sent back to the Smithsonian exhibit halls. -
TR runs for presidency in the Bull Moose Party
By 1912, Roosevelt had decided to run for a third
term as president. Republicans wanted Roosevelt, but Taft had the advantage of being the holder of the office.
At the Republican convention in June 1912, Taft supporters replaced Roosevelt delegates with Taft delegates in a number of delegations. Republican progressives refused to vote and formed a new third party, the Progressive Party. They nominated Roosevelt for president.
