Ten Events Which Led To The Civil War

  • The Missouri Compromise.

    The Missouri Compromise.
    Created a geopolitical line between North and South. Slave and Abolitionist. Was the origin of several other events later that led up to the Civil War.
  • Nat Turner's Rebellion.

    Nat Turner's Rebellion.
    A slave uprising led by a slave Nat Turner led a group and massacered their plantations owners. Cause Virigina law makers to take away the few civil rights Slaves have and refusing to educate them.
  • Texas becomes a state.

    Texas becomes a state.
    Texas becomes a state on December 29th 1845 giving the southern slave states more power. Contributes greatly to the Civil War.
  • Mexican-American War Ends.

    Mexican-American War Ends.
    When the Mexican-American War ended in 1848 which ceded western territories to America which would be admitted as states. It was over all discussed if they would be free or slave? Congress in 1850 passed the Compromise of 1850 which made California a free state and allowed those in Utah and New Mexico to choose.
  • Fugitive Slave Act of 1850.

    Fugitive Slave Act of 1850.
    Passed along side the Compromise of 1850. Federal officials who who did not arrest runaway slaves to have to pay a fine. This caused abolitionists to increase their efforts at freeing slaves and getting them into Canada.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin.

    Uncle Tom's Cabin.
    "Uncle Tom's Cabin" written and published by Harriet Beecher in 1852 was to tell of the evil's of slavery and became a very popular book. Even getting recognition from Abraham Lincoln himself.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act 1854

    The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 established the states of Kansas and Nebraska which also repealed the Missouri Compromise of 1820. Allowing the people of both states to decide for themselves if they should be free or slave state. Causing supporters of both sides to flood Kansas and cause political turmoil and violence.
  • John Brown Raids Harper Ferry.

    John Brown Raids Harper Ferry.
    John Brown a radical abolitionist gathered a group of radicals which included five free blacks and attempted to raid the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry Virginia with the intent to start a revolt amongst the slaves.
  • Abraham Lincoln elected President of the United States.

    Abraham Lincoln elected President of the United States.
    The election of Abraham Lincoln as President of the United States caused several southern states which first seceeding being South Carolina followed by other southern slave states.
  • Attack on Fort Sumter.

    Attack on Fort Sumter.
    Following the seccession of several southern states. Southern warships bombared Fort Sumter for 32 hours and captured the Fort. The Attack on Fort Sumtner was the first battle of the Civil War.
