Texas Independence Timeline

  • Battle of Gonzales

    At Gonzales and San Antonio, Texas rebels force Mexican military to retreat. The Texan army enjoyed their first win. The Texans drove the Mexicans out of San Antonio in December 1835.
  • Tensions between Texas and Mexico

    The Mexican government was encouraging border raids and warning at any attempt at annexation would lead to war.
  • The Alamo

    This battle was 13 days long. It happened because Santa Anna organized a force of about 6,000 troops to put down the rebellion but when the troops arrived at San Antonio they found over 180 texan rebels holed up in an mission.
  • Declared Independence

    Texas declared its independence from Mexico. Shortly after the texans declared their independence they drafted a new constitution that drew heavily.
  • Battle of Goliad

    The Mexican army made the Texans mad. Fannin and his men surrendered hoping the Mexican's would disarm and leave Texas. A firing squad executed more than 300 men, the losses of these men devastated Texans but also united them in support of their new country.
  • Battle of San Jacinto and the Treaty of Velasco

    The Mexicans were routed and hundreds of people were taken prisoner, including Santa Anna in exchange for his freedom Santa Anna gave them their independence by signing a treaty.
  • The Republic of Texas

    Sam Houston was elected for president and voted 3,277 to 91 in favor of becoming part of the united states. Congress did not want Texas as a slave state because Mexico still said they owned Texas. Finally Jackson signed a resolution officially recognizing Texas as an independent nation.
  • Texan Annexation

    This is when Texas annexed from Mexico because the United States wanted them but Mexico said if the United States tried to make Texas a state they would declare war.
