The Election of 1860
Abraham Lincoln was a Northern Republican elected to president in 1860. Many people in the south were upset because Lincoln was an abolitionist, and they did not recognize him as a candidate. -
South Carolina Secedes 1860
South Carolina seceded from the union because they were worried about what Abraham Lincoln was going to do. They didn't feel represented by the Federal Government anymore. They also were concerned that they would no longer be aloud to own slaves, which their economy depended on. -
Confederacy 1861
By 1861 the last of the southern states had seceded, and the confederacy was created. Confederacy is the group of southern states who decided to leave the union and wanted to create the Confederate States of America. -
Battle at Fort Sumter 1861
On April 12, 1861, at Charleston Harbor in South Carolina, The Confederacy opened fire on the Union garrison holding Fort Sumter. These shots officially started the war. -
Battle of Bull Run 1861
One of the first major battles in the war. It was the first really bloody battle. Confederate victory. -
The Battle of Antietam 1862
The bloodiest single day in American military history ended in a tie, but the Confederate retreat gave Abraham Lincoln the “victory” he needed before issuing the Emancipation Proclamation. -
The Battle of Gettysburg 1863
An estimated 51,000 soldiers were killed, wounded, captured, or listed as missing after Gettysburg. Gettysburg was a Union victory. Up to this point in the war the Confederacy was winning the war, so this was the turning point. -
End of the Civil War 1865
With Lee's surrender, the last Confederate army ceased to exist, bringing a formal end to the bloodiest four years in U.S. history.
