  • The revolution begins

    The first congress met in phildephia ri resolvethe conflict with the english. All of the colonies exept georgia sent represntives. The delegates voted to continue a boycott of britsh goods and to prepare colonial militatias for a fight.They also wrote a delerstion of rights to present to the king
  • Declaring Independence

    Thomas Paine wrote a pamphlet called Common Sense that argued for breaking away from Great Britain. It was written in a style of writting that common people could understand.Paine believed that monarchies were unfair and that the people should make the laws. His words convinced many colonists that the time was right for independence
  • The revolution begins

    A british general desided to disarm the boston militia known as minutemen. The sons of liberty learned of the british plan. Paul Revere and William Dawes raced on horseback across the countyside warning thst the british were coming. After the shot heard round the world in lexington, the minutemen and british forces started fighting. The revolutionary war had begun.

    Reprsentives from 12 of the colonies met again in philadelphia for the second contimental congress. They made plans for a Continetal army and chose George Washinton to command it. The congress also sighned the Olive branch petition one last effort to keep the peace. King george th III angirly rejected the peace offer. Teh fighting began to spread.

    General Washingtons first task was to build the Continental Army. More than 230,000 eventualy served, while another 145,000 Americans joined militias. After British offered freedom to enslaved Africans who fought for them, the Continetal Army allowed free African Americans to join. American Indian groups fought for both sides during the war. Woman ran farms and businesses for their husbands, raised money t=for supplies, and served as messengers, nursees and spys

    Aggressive Patriots launched an attacked on British settlements in Canada but were defeated in Quebec
  • Delaring Indepencence

    Thomas Jefferson, with the help of John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Robert R. Livingston and Roger Sherman drafted the Decaration of Independence. This document expressed three ideas (1) that all men posses the unalienable rights of "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness", (2) that King George III had a violated the colonist rights and (3) that the colonist had the right and even the duty to break away Great Britain.

    The Continental Congress approved the Declaration Of Independence. The United States of America was born.

    Washington and 2,400 soldiers crossed the Delaware River. They surprised the british with a huge win in the Battle of Trenton. Washington then pushed on to victory in the battle of Princeton. After the British suffered a major defeat at the Bsttle of Saratoga in 1777

    France and Spain agreed to help the Americans. The foreign aid was critical. The harsg winter at Valley Forge, Pennsylyvania, killed more than a fifth of Washingtons soliders

    The British had a large navy, so Americans attacked individual ships rather than fighting large battles. With fewer than 100 ships, the American navy sank 200 British ships.

    In the west George Rogeres Clark, an explorer and mapper, built a frontier army while weaking the British. He captured British settlements and convinced American Indians to stay out of the war.
