Protecting the settlements drains the Israeli military and makes travel for Palestinians to the West Bank more difficult. Israel and Palestinian Authority must negotiate for a peace agreement.

    Egypt blockaded Israel, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Iraq moved troops to Israel's borders and made threatening statements. Israel launched preemptive strike. Israel captured the West Bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan, The Golan Heights from Syria and the Gaza Strip and all of the Sinai Peninsula from Egypt. More Palestinians and Jews became refugees. Terrorism became more common.

Trade, business relations, tourism, cultural exchange and scientific cooperation between the 2 nations increased, however slower than expected.

    Through the intense diplomatic efforts by the U.S the year before, Egypt became the 1st Arab country to recognize Israel as a country. They are now entering a peace treaty. Israel returned the Sinai to Egypt that was captured int he 1967 war. Also, removed Jewish families from the homes they had established. This agreement became a model for Israel's land for peace policy.

    PLO units in southern lebanon increasingly attacked communities in northern israel. This led to the second Lebanon war in 2006.

    1987, Palestinians in the Gaza strip and the West Bank engaged in an uprising or intifada, gaining Israeli control pf the territories. Palestinians attacked Israeli's with improvised weapons supplied by the PLO. Suicide attacks against civilians in Israel began. The conflict continued until the Oslo accords in 1993.

    A set of agreements that began in 1993 when Israel and the PLO signed the declaration of principles (DOP). Both Israelis and Palastinians acuse eachother of not fufilling their obligations.

    2002, during the Beirut Summit of the Arab League, Prince Abdullah of Saudi Arabia proposed peace endorsed by the Muslim League. They offered Israel peace in return for Israel to withdraw from all territories in the 1967 war and recognizing Independent Palestine withe East Jerusalem as its capital. Israel rejects the demand that it would withdraw the territories. Israeli leaders met with Arab League reps to talk about negotiations.

    Prime Minister Ariel Sharon went ahead with the policy of Disengagement or physical separation of Israel from Palestinian territories. This results in Israel removing itself from the territory, so Palestinians living there could govern themselves. The plan was criticized because it was not part of the negotiations. Since Israel withdrew from Gaza, the number of rockets fired into Israel increased.

    Hezbollah a radical Islamist Organization committed to destroying Israel. They attacked the Lebanon-Israel border as well as the Israeli army. This resulted in the loss of civilian lives as well as property damage when Israel retaliated. Israel damaged Lebanon's transportation and infrastructure to stop Hezbollah resupply and redeploy.

    Palastinians elected a majority of Hamas members to the Palastinians athority Legislature. They declared that the sections would be uplifted once the Hamas recognized Israel as a country.

    December 27, 2008 - January 18, 2009. Israel attacked Hamas targets in Gaza in attempt to stop rocket attacks in South Israel. Hundreds of militants were killed. Hamas launched attacks from urban areas, there were many civilian casualties. Gaza's buildings and economy were destroyed.

    Before 2011, no Arab State had a democratic government. December 18, 2010 citizens in Arab states began to protest against autocratic and oppressive governments. Tunisian president left the country in January and Egyptian president resigned the following month due to the Arab Spring. Protests also occurred in Algeria, Bahrain, Jordan, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Syria, Yemen and other countries. A long term impact is that the Arab-Israeli peace process is not clear.
