French and Indian War
This was a 9 year war. This was fought to see who would control the colonial territory in North America. This was fought between France and Great Britain. It ranged from 1754-1763, and British gained victory. -
Proclamation of 1763
This was issued by King George III that transferred French territory in North America to Great Britain. The colonist felt like this was a way for Great Britain to keep more control of them. So it made them upset and rebel. -
Townshend Act
These are several different Brittish Acts that were passed during 1767-1768. These were set up to raise more revenues, enforcing laws, tax colonists. The colonists were pretty upset by these which in the end resulted in the Boston Massacre. -
Boston Massacre
This was a unnecessary event that took place on King Street. British troops were being attacked by mobs of Boston residents and encouraged to fire their guns. The soldiers heard the word fire thinking it was from their captain. So the soldiers starting firing and killing Boston residents. -
Tea Act
This act reduced the taxes for the British East India company. It was set in place by Great Britain in hopes to reduce the amount of tea the company had and to help them financially. -
Boston Tea Party
This event took place in the Boston Harbor at midnight. A group of Massachusetts colonists went onto the boats and threw overboard over 300 chests of tea. They did this as a protest against the Tea Act, which was set in place to lower the tea tax for East India Company which took over the America Tea Trade. -
Intolerable Acts
These were laws set in place by the British Parliament after the Boston tea party. These were passed to give consequences to the Massachusetts colonists that threw the tea off the boats. -
Sugar Act
This act took place to tax any sugar or molasses that was imported in. It was a way to raise revenue. -
First Continental Congress
The First Continental Congress meet in Philadelphia's Carpenter's Hall to discuss different plans and take a vote on them. The Congress group consisted of 12 out of the 13 colonies. -
Lexington and Concord
This battle should never have happened because the Brittish General Thomas Gage was hoping to seize weapons to stop the violence. However, when the British troops marched into Lexington they were met by a Patriot group and shots were fired and killings happened. The British troops continued onto Concord. They were surrounded. They lost almost double the amount of men than the Patriots. This battle was the start of the American Revolutionary war. -
Second Continental Congress
The 13 colonies met in Philadelphia. They declared their independence from Britain. This was done after the Revolutionary War begun. -
Bunker Hill
This was a battle early on in the Revolutionary war. More of the fighting took place on Breed's hill, but is still known as the Battle of the Bunker Hill. Even though the British won this battle, it gave encouragement to the American soldiers because they were really inexperienced. -
Olive Branch Petition
This was done as an attempt for the colonists to avoid war with Britain. This was documenting the colonists loyalty to Britain. -
Common Sense
This was written by Thomas Paine. This was written to encourage the people of the colonies to become independent from Britain. -
Declaration of Independence
This was put into place to announce independence from Britain. There were 5 people that were put on the committee to write the Declaration of Independence: Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Roger Sherman, Robert Livingston, and Thomas Jefferson. Although Thomas Jefferson wrote most of it. -
Battle of Trenton
George Washington defeated the British troops. It was a small victory. However, it was really needed because it gave the American Troops the confidence after losing battle after battle. -
Battle of Saratoga
These were several battles between the British armies and the Colonists. But in the end British surrendered in October 1777. This was a turning point for the Americans in the Revolutionary war. -
Articles of Confederation
This was the first Constitution. It was an agreement between the 13 states of the United States. -
Siege of Yorktown
This was the last major battle of the American Revolution. Even though the British troops had more men than the American and French troops, they surrendered on October 17, 1781. The American and French troops dug trenches and were able to blast the British troops with cannons. -
Treaty of Paris
This was signed by King George III of Great Britain, where Britain recognized the America's Independence. It was also the end of the Revolutionary war.
