Benedict of Nursia

St.Benedict was born in Nursia,Italy and educated in Rome.He was repelled by the vices of the city and in about the year 50.He decided to live the life of a hermit and settled at the mountainous Subiaco, where he lived in a cave for three years,fed by a monk named Romanus.He in about 530 began to build the monastery that was to be the birthplace of Western monasticism.He wrote his famous Rule. He died at Monte Cassino on March 21 and was named patron protector of Europe.His feast day is July 11.

The Council of Nicea

Council of Nicaea, (787), the seventh ecumenical council of the Christian church, meeting in Nicaea. It attempted to resolve the Iconoclastic Controversy, initiated in 726 when Emperor Leo III issued a decree against the worship of icons. The council declared that icons deserved reverence and veneration but not adoration.
