    World War II meeting of the heads of government with the US, the UK and the Soviet Union. This meeting was to re-establish the war-torn Europe. Was the second of three wartime conferences.

    Iron Curtin

    The imaginary boundary dividing Europe into two areas until the end of the Cold War. The Soviet Union used satellite states (states around it) to block itself from contact with the West or non-Soviet controlled areas. This separated families and friends for a long time due to the facts that no one could come in or out of the controlled areas. Out of this, the Berlin Wall was created.

    Berlin Blockade

    First major international crises in which the Soviet Union blocked the Western Allies way of entry to the sectors of Berlin under Western control. So the Western Allies organized the Berlin airlift to send supplies to the people of West Berlin.
  • NATO and Warsaw Pact

    NATO is the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is created which is an alliance between ten western Europe and U.S and Canada where an attack on any of these countries will be met with armed force by all members. The USSR saw NATO as a threat so they created the Warsaw Pact which included the Soviet Union, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and Albania.

    Mao's Era

    The People's Republic of China was created after the civil war. Mao Zedong dictated this country and carried out the execution on millions to institute collectivization. They followed the Soviet's model of the Five-Year Plans economically. The People's Republic of China was involved in the Korean War which cost them greatly since they were coming from their own civil war.The Soviet Union provided economic aid and training during the 1950s.

    Korean War

    The war between North and South Korea in which the UN and US helped aid South Korea and the Soviet Union helped North Korea. War in Korea arose from the division of Korea in WW2 and the Cold War only pushed it to develop faster.
  • Joseph Stalin

    Joseph Stalin
    Born on December 18, 1879 in Gori, Georgia. He ws a son of a cobbler and washerwoman. He was a fragile child so this caused him to want to be great and get respect. Stalin rose to power as General Secretary of the Communist Party and took over as Soviet dictator after Lenin's death. His Red Army helped defeat Nazi Germany during WW2. Stalin believed that the Allies were after him so he created a "buffer zone". Stalin died during the early stages of the Cold War.

    Vietnam War

    The US was involved with the war to prevent a Communist takeover in South Vietnam. This was part of the containment policy. The UN allowed unification elections but the Soviet delagation rejected this plan, the "American Plan". During the Vietnam War, president John F Kennedy had more issues with Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev which goes on to form the Cuban Missile Crises.

    the Soviets announced the development of a rocket that could travel great distances. They use this rocket to launch Sputnik, the first unmanned satellite, which made the Americans feel behind on technology.

    Sputnik 1 was the first intercontinental ballistic missile launched, being the first man-made object to be placed in Earth's orbit. This was a surprise to most Americans since space was seen as the next frontier.The Americans to want to gather more intelligence about the Soviet military's activities due to the demonstration of overwhelming power. This also threw the Americans into the Space Race, in which who will get the first man to space and who will be able to explore space first.
  • Superpower Conflict

    Eisenhower proposed the U.S and Soviet Union be able to watch each other by flying over each other's territories. While the Soviets said no, the U.S C.I.A started secret spy flights over the Soviet Union. So the Soviets shot down one of the U.S plane, called U-2s, and captured it's pilot. Called the U-2 incident.

    Eisenhower signed a public order creating the National Aeronautics and Space Administration aka NASA which was a federal agency dedicated to space exploration. But the Soviets were one step ahead and launched the first man into space.

    Cuban Missile Crisis

    The confrontation between the U.S and the Soviet Union concerning the Soviet ballistic missile deployment in Cuba. This was the closet the Cold War came to a full-scale nuclear war. After a long period of tense negotiation, Kennedy and Khrushchev came to an agreement in which the Soviets would dismantle their offensive weapons in Cuba and return them back to the Soviet Union.

    Cultural Revolution

    The sociopolitical movement that took place in the People's Republic of China. Mao Zedong wanted to preserve the 'true' Communist ideology by taking out all the things from China that indicate or come from the past. This revolution was Mao's comeback from the Great Leap Forward.

    Khmer Rouge

    The name given to the Communist Party of Kampuchea in Cambodia. This was formed as an offshoot of the Vietnam People's Army. The leader was Pol Pot, Cambodia's dictator. Responsible for the Cambodian genocide.
  • Dwight D. Eisenhower

    Dwight D. Eisenhower
    Born October 14, 1890, Dwight Eisenhower was the 34th president of the US and was the first Supreme Allied Commander of NATO. Was in the military and the day he got married, he was promoted to first lieutenant. Served General MacArthur until return to US in early 1940s. Commanded D-Day Allied forced in Normandy invasion. Became President of Colombia University until leaving to accept position in NATO and then running for US president. Promoted Atoms for Peace in second term in office.

    Americans Buzz Aldrin along with Neil Armstrong (Not in Picture) were the first to land on the moon, during the Space Race so they technically won the race.
  • Harry S. Truman

    Harry S. Truman
    Born May 8, 1884. Harry Truman was the Franklin Delano Roosevelt's vice president, taking over after he died. Dropped the first atomic bomb and created the policy of containment. Truman initiated the US involvement in the Korean War. Was involved in WW1, later being elected to the US senate in 1934. Died after retiring from presidency, but before wrote memoirs and oversaw construction of his presidential library.
