    Baby Boomers

    In this time, an increasing amount of babies were born each year causing the "baby boom". Some believed everyone wanted a family after years of depression and war, and others believed we wanted to outnumber the communists. At any rate this group had an affect on our society and still does today. Possible threat to the economy and social security has many up in arms.

    Iron Curtain

    The literal division point in Europe. On one side they remained Soviet, while the other was the individual countries forming their own alliances and military. The Berlin Wall and Checkpoint Charlie, were two area that marked this division between the two sides.

    Red Scare

    While there was a previous Red Scare in the early 20's there was another one right after World War II. This was similar to the idea of McCarthyism. This is where the far of communism is pressed upon the people causing tension and governmental issues.
  • NATO

    The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was founded by countries including Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, The UK, and the US. Their goal was to stop the spreading of Communism.

    Divided Germany

    After World War II, Europe divided into 4 parts. French, British, US, and Soviet. In 1949, this later turned into East Germany; the Soviets, and West Germany; French, British, and US. They were opposing forces still in disagreement with one another. Though these two were joined back together in 1990.
  • Korean War

    North Korea attacked the South causing the United Nations to come in and defend the South and China for the North. This war started out civil and became a cold war in Asia. It lasted 3 years and ended with an agreement to have a new border, the "38th Parallel" where both sides would maintain a patrol that was demilitarized.
  • Warsaw Pact

    The Warsaw Pact was founded in Eastern Europe and included East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Albania, Bulgarria, and the Soviet Union. This was a communist military acting in opposition of NATO.

    The Space Race

    The competition between the U.S. and the USSR to see who had the ability to fly into space first. The soviets were the first to orbitit, which caused panic in America.

    The National Aeronautics and Space Administration, or today known as NASA, was formed.

    On this day, over 1400 Cuban exiles stormed in to overthrow Castro but were outnumbered. They surrendedered within 24 hours, one of the shortest battles there has ever been.

    A dispute between the US and the Soviets as they were only 90 miles away from the US shoreline and had potential intentions to plan a full scale nuclear attack. A spy plan confirmed their missile facilities.

  • Gulf of Tonkin

    There was a claim that North Vietnamese had twice attacked american soldiers at the Gulf of Tonkin. This created an open war between the two countries and later spiraled the war in South Korea which started with the landing of combat from the US.
  • Tet Offensive

    "Largest military campaign" or surprise attacks on command both in military and civillian in South Vietnam. It is known as Tet as that is the Vietnamese New Year.
  • Watergate Scandal

    There was a break in at the DNC Head Quarters or the Watergate Facility in Washington where Richard Nixons administration tried to cover up actions of abuse, bugging offices, and ordering harassment to others, this lead to talk of impeachment and concluded wtith the resignation of Nixon.
  • End of War

    Christmas speech was given announcing the end of the Cold War. Also, the Warsaw Pact resolved, and the Soviets ceased fire.
