U.S. Creates Hydrogen Bomb
The United States tested the first hydrogen bomb in the Marshall islands. When the Soviet Union finally set off a nuclear bomb Truman wanted a better bomb to stay ahead of them. They started making a hydrogen bomb. Dr. Teller made a plan on how to make the bomb with the help of Stanislaw Ulam, a Polish mathematician. Making this bomb affected the Cold War because they wanted to see who had more weapons to show their power. The U.S. and the Soviet Union were in an arms race. -
Fidel Castro comes to power in Cuba
Fidel Castro became leader of Cuba when he kicked Fulgencio Batista out of power. Under Fidel Castro he turns Cuba Communist. After that happens the United States becomes enemies with Cuba. Cuba and Soviet Union became friends when the Soviet Union sent people over to set up Cuba's defenses. U-2 Spy Plane Controversy
We had a U-2 Spy Plane flying over the Soviet Union when it was shot down. The plane that we sent was taking pictures. When it was shot by a missile the pilot lived but was captured. The pilot was convicted of espionage and then went to jail. This was bad for the Cold War because the tension between both countries were raised. This made the United States look very bad. Bay of Pigs
The Bay of Pigs is an invasion of Cuba by Cubans who don't like the government. The invasion was funded by the CIA. 0The army grouped up in Guatemala and two days later they invaded Cuba. The invaders surrendered in three days. This affected the Cold War because Fidel Castro got more confident and people thought more of him as a hero. This also led to the Cuban missile crisis because of the bad relationship both countries had with each other. -
Berlin Wall
In 1961 the Berlin Wall was being built by East Germany to divide the city. On the West Side is where the United States were and the east side was controlled by the soviets. When the wall was built East Germany said it was to protect themselves from fascism. People described it as an actual iron curtain that went across the city. When the Cold War was happening tensions were high and people in East Germany were all going to West Germany. The Soviets mad the wall to stop the Immigration. -
U.S. Invades Grenada
Grenada was controlled by the British until we invaded them and won withing a couple of weeks. The U.S. combined with Jamaica only used 7600 troops for the invasion. Britain, Canada and other countries did not like that we invaded them. The United Nations General assembly voted in support of the United States so nothing bad ended up happening to us because of this. We invaded the island because there were Cuban missiles there and they were becoming friends with Cuba.
