    The First Lightning is the first atomic bomb the soviets launched. It was tested at Semipalatinsk in Kazakhstan. The explosion was about 20 kilotons.

    The Korean War was the first armed conflict during the Cold War. The Soviet Union backs up North Korea where the United States back up south Korea. The war ends in a cease fire.

    The Soviet Union blocks off all the road and railroads to West Berlin. This was known as the first crisis in the Cold War because they had no way to get food, water, medicine, etc.

    Through this hotline John F. Kennedy had direct communication with Kremlin in Moscow. This hotline was to prevent war from happening. They did not want a miscommunication so it allowed them to pick up the phone and call each other directly.

    President Richard Nixon visits China.This visit was to try and make peace between China and America. He wanted to fix the diplomatic relationship between them.

    The SALT I treaty stands for Strategic Arms Limitations Talks/Treaty. The Soviet Union and United States signed this treaty which limited the use of weapons including nuclear missiles.
  • Mikhail Gorbachev

    Mikhail Gorbachev
    Mikhail Gorbachev was elected the new leader of the Soviet Union after the death of Konstantin Chernenko. As the new leader he begins to revise the soviets policies and change some of the ways.

    The INF Treaty which stood for Intermediate-Range And Shorter-Range Missiles Treaty. President Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev signed the treaty in agreeing to get rid of any landbased or intermediate based missiles.

    When the East German Communist Party said that citizens were able to cross the wall, that night everyone ran to the wall. Some were able to pass while others brought objects to break it down.
