The Magna Carta established certain and basic rights for the citizens of England that could not be taken from them. The Magna Carta also issued that the king's power was not autocratic and was limited.

    The Creation of the English Parliament
    The English Parliament was created in 1241 to advise the king. This advocated for limited monarchy because members of the English Parliament challenged the king and strove to remove the king from power. The English Parliament consisted of the House of Lords and the House of Commons.
  • English Civil War

    English Civil War
    In the 1600s, the Stuart Kings tried to rule by divine right without consulting Parliament. The Petition of Rights was created in 1628, and stated that the king could not levy taxes without Parliament's consent and could not imprison prisoners without a divine right or a trial by judge. A civil war broke out between the Puritans (supporters of Parliament) and the Cavaliers (supporters of the king).

    James II Marriage to Anne Hyde
    When James II married Anne Hyde, the population grew worried as they thought England would be converted back to Catholicism. Parliament was among those who feared England's converting back to Catholicism so they fought to reduce the monarchy's power.

    The Habeas Corpus Act were signed in 1679 which limited the king's power by providing that a prisoner must be brought by a judge with a statement of charges.

    In 1689, William and Mary become leaders of England. William and Mary acquired the throne by Parliament in 1689. By Parliament selecting William and Mary to rule England, this established a collaboration between the monarchy and Parliament.

    The English Bill of Rights were drafted by Parliament and was a set of acts set to ensure the supremacy of the Parliament over the monarchy. Legislaive introduced in the Houses of Parliament limited the monarchy's power.
