Storming of the Bastille
Rumors of foreign troops coming to Paris to attack the citizens were flying around. On July 14 a mob searching for weapons stormed the prison Bastille. They killed many of the guards and prison commanders and marched around with the commanders heads on pikes. This was important because it was an event that was symbolic in the French revolution. It is now a holiday, similar to the Fourth of July. -
The Great Fear
The rebellion spread to the countryside quickly. Rumors of the nobles hiring outlaws to terrorize the peasants spread like fire. This was all unnecessary, and it made the peasants themselves become outlaws. Thousands of women stormed the palace and killed guards. They demanded that Louis and Marie return to Paris, and they agreed. The Rights of Man
The Declaration of the Rights of man and of the Citizen is a document similar to the declaration of independence. The document stated that men are born free and have equal rights. Some of these rights are liberty, property, freedom of speech and freedom of religion. -
Louis XVI Attempts to Escape
While all of the rebellions and changes were going on on the country, Louis was wondering if it was safe to be there. He was being told he was in danger and decided to leave with his family. He was caught at the border and returned to Paris. This event was important because it showed that he was genuinely worried about being overthrown. It showed that the change in the country was very serious
