League Conception Date
The Big East Conference was created on May 31, 1979, with Dave Gavitt running the head of operations in the conference with the help of other coaches like Jim Boheim and John Thompson. They projected the target market to be mostly people from the North East and college age students along with men that enjoyed basketball. A couple of years later they created their own Big East Network to broadcast their Basketball games before ESPN started to Broadcast them. -
First Teams Join
The first teams to join the Big East in the inagural season of 1979-1980 were Providence, Sryacuse, Geogretown, Seton Hall, Connecicut and Boston College. Shortyly after Pittsburgh and Villanova both joined the conference. -
The Confernece Tournament Started in 1980
The Conference Tournament was started in 1980, the location of the event was held at the Providence Civic Center. The championship game was between Georgetwon University Hoyas and the Sryacuse University Orangeman -
The Tournament Moves to MSG
The Big East tournament moved to the Big Apple at Madison Square Garden. Formerly the touranment was held in 1980 at the Providence Civic Center, then the Carrier Dome in Sryacuse, New York, and the year before in 1982 at Hartford Civiv Center. This official marked the start of an endorsement deal with MSG for the Big East -

Introduction of Football
In 1991, the Big East wanted to try and get the most profit they could, so to keep up with the trend of other conferences, they introduced football. They added Miami, Virginia Tech, West Virginia and Pittsburgh as football only teams, until Pittsburgh later became full members of the Big East -
Confernece Realignment
In November of 2012 it was annouced that the original Big East Conference was realigning with the loss of Sryacuse and Pittsburgh to the ACC and then Rutgers to the Big Ten in 2014, also the loss of Connecticut, Louiville, UCF, Cinncinati, and Temple to the American Conference. However they added, Creigton, Butler, and Xavier. -
