    Thesis

While there is a continous theme of colonized areas rebelling all over the world, there are massive changes in Latin America, where independence movements are at an all time high and more successful than ever before between 1750 and 1914.
  • St.Domingue Rebellion

In 1792, there was a successful slave rebellion in St. Domingue. This shows change as slave uprisings were common but successful uprisings were far and few between.
  • Haiti Independence

in 1804, Haiti declared indpendence. This shows change as a previously colonized island, and entirely enslaved people reclaimed their land and became independent. This event sparks plans and serves as motivation for upcomming uprisings in Latin America.
  • Mexico Rebellion

In 1810, Father Hidalgo initated a rebellion in Mexico against Spain. This shows change as Spain previously held total control over Mexico, but the motivated people in Mexico were able to successfully take power.
  • Mexico Independence

In 1821, Mexico declared independence and their empire lasted 2 years under Iturbide. This shows continuity as another country claimed independence after a succesful rebellion.
  • Brazil Independence

in 1822, Brazil declared independence, establishing an empire under Dom Pedro I. This shows continuity as another country in Latin America was able to successfully obtain their independence from previous oppressive control by another country.
  • Gran Colombia seperation

In 1830, Bolivar died and as a result Gran Colombia dissolved into seperate countries (Venezuela, Colombia, and Ecuador). This shows continuity as another country was not able to hold all of its land and colonies together and the countries broke from its control.
  • Mexico reform

In 1854, Benito Juarez lead a reform in Mexico. This shows change as Mexico is altering their form of government from previously just continuing a monarchy after seperation from Spain.
  • French intervention in Mexico

in 1862 to 1867, after President Benito Juarez's decision to suspend and not fulfil Mexico's interest payment debts, Napolean deemed millitary action justifiable and invaded Mexico. This shows continuity as Mexico continues to struggle in their development of the country.
  • Ten years war in Cuba

In 1868 to 1878, Cuba was defeated in a war in attempt to gain independence from Spain. This shows continuity as Spanish colonies continue to attempt uprisings and rebellions for independence.
  • Panamanian independence

in 1903, Panama declared independence. This shows continuity as another country in Latin America was able to obtain independence.
