The Prelude to the American Revolution

  • The French and Indian War

    The French and Indian War
The French and Indian War was a seven year war fought between the British and the French in mainly America. After the British won the war, it left the colonies in anger. It led to many new acts to come in the colonies to aggravate the people. The aggravation of the people led to the start of the idea of independence.
  • The Proclamation of 1763

    The Proclamation of 1763
The Proclamation of 1763 was issued right after the French and Indian War and was to stop people from settling west of the Appalachian Mountain Range. This was highly ignored by the colonists and angered more Native Americans to attack the colonies.
  • The Currency Act

    The Currency Act
The Currency Act of 1764 was set to "forbid them (colonies) from designating future currency emissions as legal tender for public and private debts". This basically meant that in the future the American Colonies were not allowed to print currency and create money that would be regulated for purchasing.
  • The Stamp Act

    The Stamp Act
The Stamp Act of 1765 was another act set to add taxes to common household and personal items. The tax went on basically anything that was paper or mailed. This set colonists to start losing very much hope for the British Government and also led to the phrase "Taxation without Representation" which refers to that American representatives did not get to got to the continental congress in Britain to express their needs.
  • The Boston Massacre

    The Boston Massacre
The Boston Massacre occurred in 1770 and was the unjustly killing of innocent men in Boston by a group of British soldiers. The men were slightly harassing the soldiers with snowballs in anger but were not doing anything to get themselves shot at. This event was seen as the first fatalities of a soon to come war.
  • The Boston Tea Party

    The Boston Tea Party
The Boston Tea Party happened in 1773 and was when a group of militia dressed up as Mohawk Indians and intercepted a trade ship in the Boston port. They then proceeded to dump crates of tea off of the ship in an act of revolting the British taxes made by the Tea Act.
  • The Tea Act

    The Tea Act
The Tea Act of 1773 was an enforced act that was meant to lower prices for British imported tea to help sales rise up for the British East India Company. The colonists did not like this act because it was the idea that they were being almost told what to buy and ruining the business of other tea companies.
  • The Intolerable Acts

    The Intolerable Acts
The Intolerable Acts were a set of acts set to "punish" the colonists for the Boston Tea Party. The main Intolerable Act was the closing of the Boston Port until the tea was paid for from the BTP. This led the Colonists to believe that the British Government was acting with treason towards America.
  • The Quartering Act

    The Quartering Act
The Quartering Act of 1774 was a set of laws to enforce that the colonies allow soldiers to live in any available home and also be fed and treated to as they demand. This as well angered the colonists for they did not want to give up their goods for soldiers they did not ask to have.
  • The Sugar and Molasses Act

    The Sugar and Molasses Act
The Sugar and Molasses Act of 1774 was a modification of the original act set in 1733 which added tax to items such as sugar and molasses. This tax infuriated the colonists so much as to ignore the tax in all and also to attack common tax collectors.
  • The battles of Lexington and Concord

The battles of Lexington and Concord
The battles of Lexington and Concord were the first major battles that started the American Revolution. These battles made the colonies realize that they were officially in a war with Britain.
