  • Throughout, the 17th century English gradually became more standardised. But there were still variant spellings, grammar features survivals of earlier forms of word.

    -e endings on words still were common even though these one time inflections were no longer said. Archaic forms such as 2nd person pronouns 'thou' 'thee' 'thy' and 'thine' began to disappear to be replaced by plural 'you'. With them went the verb forms that agreed with them: 'thou goest' became 'you go. 3rd person singular verb forms changed: 'he goeth' became 'he goes;' Use of auxiliary verbs in forming tenses, questions and negatives began to change 'go not there' became 'dont go there'
