The Telephone Technology Timeline

  • The Original Telephone

    The Original Telephone
On March 10, 1876 Alexander Graham Bell spoke the first words into a telephone. He was actually calling for his butler; his exact words were "Mr. Watson, come here I want to see you". On this incredible day, Bell landed the telephone era and changed history forever. Bell's telephone was the first bi-directional electronic transmission. Bell was the first inventor to receive a patent for his invention, even though there were a few others that claimed they were the first to invent the telephone.
  • Alexander Graham Bell- The inventor, The innovator, The One Who Changed Society Forever

This invention was significant to history because this is what started it all; it opened to the door to communication. Bell was trying to address a long distance communication rather than writing or speaking face to face. This impacted everything in society because again it was the first telephone; meaning it was the beginning of everything we have in phones today! There were many benefits to this invention; speaking to people immediately, faster communication. I believe there are no drawbacks.

AT&T introduced Touch-Tone or the push button phone, which allowed phones to use a keypad to dial numbers to make phone calls. Each key would transmit a certain frequency, signaling to the telephone operator which number you wanted to call. (www.BGR.com - How we stopped communicating like animals)
  • Cordless Phones

The reason that the cordless phone came about was because people didn't like being attached to the base. Cordless phones were very popular back then and still are today. This invention changed the way people saw phones; this opened the door for cellphones. Soon after, the cell phone was invented. Benefits of a cordless phone; being able to walk and talk of the phone, no long cord in the way, & it got people ready for cell phones. One drawback I could see would be change is scary for people.
  • Portable/Cordless Phones

    Portable/Cordless Phones
When the cordless phones came out, you were no longer physically attached to your phone’s base station. Beginning in the 1980s, portable phones were like a small-scale cell phone. You could talk on your phone anywhere in your house. This is where the door opened wide for actual cell phone inventions. This was a very significant invention because it was just a matter of time now before someone came up with the actual "cell phone". This had impacts on families because now you could talk anywhere.

  • The Medium is the Message

This particular technology, telephones, highlights communication. In the past it was communication with others by speaking and now it is communication through a screen. This technology diminishes our social skills because we can hide behind a screen. it minimizes our connection to people and to the world around us. i feel that it minimizes peoples' desire to learn because everything is just a click away phone. Technology is a fascinating tool but can easily be over used. The medium is dangerous.
