    The New York authorities started to offering legal walls to write on. These walls were called 5 Pointz in Queens. Writers still found new places to write in public, even though when they had the walls. They also found new ways to make graffiti like a preprinted sticker and acid-based cream that etches itself into the glass.

    In 1980 writers began to organize in crews and that started a competition between the crews. So to be the best you had to be up to spraying everything and everywhere.

    The tough time for writers

    The years 1980 to 1985 was a very hard time for writers, because of "The Buff". It was now hard to find a location to write, and the laws got tougher. In these years new writers, called toys, also started to destroy the other writers art.

    In 1972 the people of New York City declared war on graffiti. The New York authorities started cleaning the city from graffiti, and called it "The Buff".

    Tagging
    The first form of graffiti in New York was known as tagging. In the late 1960s, boys like Taki 183 started writing their names in the subway, on doors, and other public places. Soon their names could be found all over the city. In 1971, Taki 183 even made the New York Times and became the first famous graffiti writer in the city.

    New styles

    From 1971-1974, writers started using spray cans to make bubble letters or throw ups. In these years writers also started to write their tag in larger scales.
