Muslim League Originates to compete with the Congress Party
The Muslim party was originated to protect Muslim interests and was made to compete with the Congress Party. The Congress party was India's national political party made up mostly of Hindus but sometimes Muslims. -
The Salt March
Gandhi organized a demonstration to defy the hated Salt Acts. Indians had to buy salt from only the governement and also had to pay sales tax. To show their hatred Gandhi and his followers walked about 240 miles to the seacost where they bagan to make their own salt. -
Beginning of WWII
Britain forced India's armed forces to WWII with out permission from India's elected representatives. This made the people in Indian mad causing more controversy between India and Britain. -
Two Religious Groups
India is made up of two religious groups, about 350 million Hindus and 100 million Muslims. -
British try to support Nationalists, but not Indian independence
The British had tried to gain support of the Nationalists by promising governmental changes after the war. The offer did not include Indian Independence. -
Direct Action Day
The Hindus and the Muslims broke out in several cities in India. They clashed for four days in Calcutta and left more than 5,000 people dead and more than 15,000 injured. -
Religious Group Violence
Many people were on the move in the Indian subcontinent. Violence between religious groups erupted. Muslims killed Sikhs that moved into India and Hindus and Sikhs killed Muslims who were headed into Pakistan. Ghandi estimated that about 1 million people were killed. -
Partition was formed
The British House of Commons passed an act that split India into two nations; India and Pakistan. There was a West Pakistan and an East Pakistan where most of the Muslims lived. India was where most of the Hindus lived. This granted independence in one month's time. -
Indian Independence
India became the world's largest democracy as India's freedom approached.
