The Atomic Bomb
The Atomic Bomb occured on the final stage of WW2 August, 9th, 1945. The United States of America decided large atomic bombs on Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The reason why the bombs were droped was because the President of the U.S was advised by some of his advisers that any attempts to invade Japan would put America in danger, so instead they decided to order new weaons to end WW2. -
The Gouzenko Affair
Atter the end of the WW2, A Russian cipher clerk named Igor Gouzenko fled the Soviet Embassy and was able to provide enough information of a Soviet spy ring in Canada. His involvement helped to ignite the Cold War. -
Formation of the United Nations
The United Nations was first established on October, 24th, 1945. The purpose of the United Nation was to promote international co-operation and to prevent another world war from occuring.Successes that had happened for the UN was that they assisted after natural disaters, built schools, roads, dams, development aid and dissuss peacekeeping. -
The Formation of NATO
The formation of the North Alantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is an organization that involed Canada, US and 10 other countries and was meant to oppose the Soviet Union after the response of a threat. -
Korean War
The Korean War begain June, 25th, 1950 and was the conflict between communist and non-communist forces in Korea. The Soviet Union occupied the northern half of the country in the last week of the war and was able to establish a communist government while Americans occupied the southern half of the country. -
The Vietnam War
The Vietnam War was one of the longest wars in history, beginning in 1954 and ending 1975. It was basically a conflict between the communist government of the North Vietnam and it's allied forces with the South which they faced against the United States. -
The Formation of the Warsaw Pact
The formation of the Warsaw Pact happened on May 14 1955 in a response to NATO. The Warsaw Pact was made up of Eastern European nations allied with the Soviet Union. The purpose of the pact was to protect Soviet countries if they were attacked by NATO. -
The Suez Crisis
The Suez Crisis happened on October 29th 1956 and it was an important water way that connected the Mediterranean and the Red sea. Before WW2 it was owned by the British and the French and an important route linking east-to-west. The response from the USSR was that they threatened to send missiles to support Egypt. -
The Formation of NORAD
On August 1st 1957 NORAD was born. It was an orgaination that involved both Canada and the US to form the North American Air Defence. The reason behind the formation was so that both allied countries could use missile and radar units under one command center to protect them from Soviet Attacks. -
The Cancellation of the Avro Arrow
The Cancellation of the Avro Arrow was February 20th 1959. It was cancelled because costs were too high and the inability to sell the arrow to Europe or the US. Canada's involvement of the arrow was one of the greatest aeronautical achivements . -
Rise of the Berlin War
The rise of the Berlin Wall happened August 13th 1961. It was put up so that there was a division between East and West of Berlin. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
The Cuban Missile Crisis happened October 16th 1962 and was a 13 day stand off between the US and the USSR. The Soviets started sending nuclear technology to Cuba on the 24 of October. US indicates that if USSR passes through blockade it will be Nuclear war and boats started to turn around before the blockade. -
The SALT Treaty
The Salt Treaty was signed on May 26 1972 by Nixon ( President of the US) and a Genral on the Soviet side. They agreed to sign to treaty to limit the amount of nuclear missiles in their arsenals. -
Strategic Defense Initiative
The Strategic Defense Initiaive (SDI) occured March 23rd 1983. It was a program that was to develop an anti-ballistic missile system in order to defened against missile attack that would be fired. The United States were mainly worried about the USSR. -
Fall of the Berlin Wall
The Berlin Wall was brought up August 13th 1961 and was finally taken down on November 9th 1989. The wall was put up keep East from fleeing to West Berlin. It was taken down because it signalled to end the Cold War. -
The Breakup of the Soviet Uniojn
The fall of the Soviet Union happened on christmas day of 1991. the breakup of the Soviet Union transformed the world political situation, economic and military alliances all over. Which it's collapse was honered by the West as victory for freedom.
