Timeline on Abortion

  • Comstock Act

    This act bans access to information about abortion and birth control. This act defined contraceptives as obscene and illicit, making the use or distribution of them a federal offense. This was very close to 1880 when abortions were declared a criminal offense.
  • Abortions are criminalized

    This is when the Abortions were considered criminal before then they were highly frowned upon and some of them were performed in secret. They were only allowed if the woman's life was in danger. This was put under more pressure by the medical establishments than it was by social and religious institutions.
  • Abortion changes in 1967

    Abortion is classified as a felony in 49 states and Dr. Leon Belous is convicted for referring a woman to an illegal abortionist, this case leads to a 1969 California Supreme Court decision in favor of the right to choose abortion. President Kennedy also called for a repeal on abortion laws this year.
  • Roe vs Wade

    This is one of the most known cases in which abortion was termed legal. It was decided that women had the right to an abortion, and this right was protected by the Constitution in the private rights guaranteed by the 14th Amendment. They ruled that they should have this liberty without the government limiting it. Many other laws will try to change this decision over time. Roe ruled that abortion was legal until the fetus reaches viability usually around 24-28 weeks
  • States in America ban abortion to certain extent

    In the US in 2019 new laws were passed in certain states that define the point when women can have an abortion up until. ( States decided that an abortion can not occur in that state once a fetal heartbeat is detected. This milestone is normally around 6-8 weeks.
