    The first legit American establishment from the british. This colony was successful and served as an example to other colonies on how to be successful in settlements in America.
  • French Settlement

    The French settle in Quebec. This was one of France's first settlements and you could feel the increased competitiveness between the world powers to settle and conquer the western hemisphere
  • Settlers come to Massachusetts

    Settlers come to Massachusetts
    Puritans are seeking religious tolerance so they settle to America. They are blow of course and land in the Massachusetts bay. This region is more stable than the south. The colony succeeds and they build communities with churches and a strong family orientated base.
  • France enters the "30 years" war

    One of the most violent wars in European history, this war was fought over religion. France being rivals of the Holy Roman Empire entered in 1636. France was invaded by spanish forces. This is still of the longest wars in modern history.
  • population reaches 300,000

    The colonies after quite sometime begin to thrive in America. The population in this year tallies to 300,000. An impressive number considering that the first colonies primary died off.
  • 7 years War

    This was a very bloody war started by Great Britain when they seised French ships in the North American region. With the growing powers of Prussia, control of Europe was also at bay. This is considered by some to be the actual first World War.This sets the stage for the french helping americans against Britain in the revolutionary war. Both France and Britain fought a 2 sided front.
  • Birth of JQA

    John quincy Adams is born in Massachusetts. His parents being the second president of the united states John Adams and Abigail Smith.
  • Boston Tea Party

    Boston Tea Party
    One of the most crucial events in American History, a group of rebels in boston dump tea in the harbor due to the taxes being enforced from britian. This really set the wheels turning for the colonist to break away from british rule.
  • Treaty of Paris

    The treaty of Paris was the document that ended the revolutionary war. The key to this document was that it declared American independence. It also set the boundaries between British territories and American soil.
  • John Quincy graduates from Harvard

    John Quincy graduates from Harvard
    JQA graduates from Harvard with a bachelors of art. He would later go back and receive a masters of Art, though his pursuit of a law degree was the decision that would later be a part of american history.
  • French Revolution

    French Revolution
    The French revolution was a much more radical revolution then the american revolution. Much is debated about what started the revolution. A mix of poor harvests and national debt due to the other wars were the main reasons among others. Napoleon an iconic figure was the general that one that drove the revolution. The monarchy was overthrown and much to the americans liking established a republic.
  • JQA appointed minster

    JQA gets his law degree and begins his political career being appointed minster of the Netherlands by George Washington. This was at the age of 23 and JQA didn't really want to do it but was persuaded by his father John. The first step in JQA's political career. Unger writes "especially after John Quincy began walking in the winter weather wearing his exotic Russian fur hat and great coat" Washington says about him and ministry look.
  • JQA switches parties

    John Quincy was known to support the federalist party but switches parties and his alliance to the Democratic-Republican Party. The dem-rep party made the federalist party irrelevant and monroe really appreciated Adams, thus Adams switching parties.
  • U.S. declares war on Britain

    U.S. declares war on Britain
    The start of the war of 1812. Americans were frustrated due to trade restrictions and impressments of american sailors. The war ended by the Treaty of ghent but really the british were to occupied by the threatening napoleon. This war showed americans that we could defend our country against the best in the world. This was the last war for a long time as we didn't intertwine with foreign affairs and allowed america to grow as a country in the world super power it would later become
  • Napoleon exiled

    Napoleon exiled
    Napoleon the leader of the french revolution had grown power hungry. He did take and expand the french empire but was radical in doing it. Once he was defeated at Battle of Leipzig he was exiled to an island by the name of St. Helena. Unger says “Napoléon Bonaparte—proclaimed an end to private property. “The earth belongs to no one; its fruits belong to every one,” declared François Noël Babeuf." giving a look on how Bonaparte was but also on how JQA viewed him and the situation he dealt with.

    JQA becomes Secretary of State

    Monroe appoints JQA as secretary of state. This is JQA next step in his political career that point him in the nations eyes to be a presidential candidate in 1825.
  • John Quincy elected President

    John Quincy elected President
    John Quincy is elected to become the 6th president of the United States. His election was somewhat controversial when he would despite the popular vote. His presidency didn't really contribute to much because of a congress that often undercut him because it was a congress in the hands of those opposed to him.
  • John Quincy losses and becomes representative

    In the election following his presidency JQA is not reelected. He enders up losing to Andrew Jackson. After his presidency he served as a U.S rep for 17 years. This is where he made most of his political impact. This quote by Unger sums up his representation “He believed the future of the nation was at stake, and he returned day after day to fight his war against the “slaveocracy.”

    Death of JQA
    John Quincy Adams died in Washington D.C. He was a figure that helped shape the country that we know today serving most of his life in politics.
  • South Carolina secedes from the Union

    South Carolina was the first state to secede from the union. What drove them to do this was the electron of Abraham Lincoln. South Carolina a huge supporter of slavery was not happy with the union before the election and felt they had lost their voice in government with the election of Abe lincoln. This would also cause other surrounding states to secede
  • Civil War begins

    Civil War begins
    The bloodiest war in american history, this war was an internal conflict in the U.S. The two side being the Union and Confederate states. 11 states seceded from the union due to the issue of slavery and the extension of slavery in western territories. The union won the war restoring national unity.
