  • Town of York becomes City of Toronto

    Town of York becomes City of Toronto
    On this day York was renamed ‘Toronto’ so that people wouldn’t get confused between the town of York and New York. This was a turning point because the city of Toronto later grew and it later became the most populated city and also the capital of Ontario.
  • St. Lawrence Market Opening

    St. Lawrence Market Opening
    In 1845, the building that is now the St. Lawrence Market used to be Toronto City Hall, until it changed in 1850. Every week farmer's markets and antique markets are set up here. Ever since 1803, a public market has been held on the north building site. This food and antique market was named the world's best by National Geographic in April 2012. This farmer's market is an important landmark as it brings in many people who aren't from this area that check out and buy the fresh produce found here.
  • Great Fire of Toronto

    Great Fire of Toronto
    A huge fire that took 9 hours to put out destroyed a huge part of downtown. The fire was so big that some firefighters from Buffalo needed to come to Toronto to help put it out. It is said that this is the biggest fire that was ever recorded to ever happen in Toronto. This enormous fire destroyed approximately 104 buildings and injured 5 people. The major damage from this fire caused $10.3 million of damage to this city.
  • New Union Station Opening

    New Union Station Opening
    The New Union Station opened on July 1, 1893 and it has grown and is now the primary railway station in all of Toronto. Union Station has been a National Historic Site of Canada since 1975 and is also a Heritage Railway Station since 1989. If this railway station was not built traffic in the area would be terrible because the streets are so small and many people would be driving to their workplace instead.
  • City Hall Construction

    City Hall Construction
    There were 3 more City Halls before the current one was constructed in Nathan Phillips Square. The Old City Hall was built in 1899 and in 1965 it was replaced because of the shortage of space. The City Hall occasionally houses the mayor (John Tory) and the 44 members of the council. In the hall, these council members gather up and have council meetings and discuss other significant events.
  • CN Tower Opening

    CN Tower Opening
    The construction of the CN Tower was completed on June 26, 1976. This event is important to Toronto’s history because the CN Tower is the greatest landmark in Canada. It is one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World because it was the tallest free-standing building in the world. This resulted in many tourists coming to Toronto every year just to visit the CN Tower due to the fact that it is such a well-known landmark because it has many record breaking features. https://youtu.be/031QVwIBg3g
  • Toronto Raptors Established

    Toronto Raptors Established
    The Toronto Raptors are 1 out of 3 Canadian basketball teams to ever be in the NBA. In 1946 the Toronto Huskies were founded, but in they were disbanded the next year. The Raptors and Grizzlies were both founded in 1995, but in 2001 the Grizzlies relocated to Memphis. This left the Raptors as the only Canadian basketball team in the NBA. The establishment of the Raptors is a turning point because basketball in Canada began to spread around as more people started to play and view the sport.
  • Toronto Raptors in Eastern Conference Finals

    Toronto Raptors in Eastern Conference Finals
    On this day the Toronto Raptors made it to Eastern Conference finals by beating Miami Heat in game 7 in the semi-finals of the 2015-2016 NBA season. This was the first time the Toronto Raptors made it to the Eastern Conference Finals in franchise history.
