    Car ownership in the UK reached 11 million
    Car ownership reached 11 million in 1970 but now (2022) there are 1.446 billion cars that are on earth. With the car ownership then reaching 11 million in 1970 this meant that more people were able to become tourists and travel to places without needing to catch coaches. This meant that wherever they went they were now able to travel further therefore boosting the economy of the area further.
  • Introduction of the Boeing 747 ‘jumbo jet’

    Introduction of the Boeing 747 ‘jumbo jet’
    The Boeing 747 'jumbo jet' was the first jumbo jet to ever fly. The Boeing 747 could carry up to a maximum of 524 passengers. This impacted tourism as people could finally start going abroad on planes instead of travelling by train or car. Tourists were now able to fly to countries.
  • Concorde came into service

    Concorde came into service
    The Concorde was the first supersonic passenger-carrying commercial aeroplane that was built jointly by Great Britain and France. This meant that more people were able to travel abroad via plane and was the start of holiday destinations abroad becoming more popular.
  • British people made 20million visits abroad

    British people made 20million visits abroad
    In 1982, 20 million British people had travelled abroad but in 2021 alone there were 19.1 million British travellers go abroad. This meant that the Concorde made a significant difference to the number of people going abroad became more popular within the UK.
  • Launch of Ryanair

    Launch of Ryanair
    Ryanair was launched in 1985 and is now the worlds fifth biggest carrier in its yearly world airline passenger rankings. This meant that a lot of people were choosing Ryanair and this impacting the UK tourism industry as Ryanair is still a very popular airline.
  • Worldwide tourist arrivals topped 400million

    Worldwide tourist arrivals topped 400million
    Tourism was now booming due to more and more airlines appearing so everyone was travelling all over the world. This impacted the UK tourism as more people were leaving and entering the UK so the UK had to build more airports to be able to accommodate everyone all over the UK.
  • Tourists spending more time abroad

    Longer holidays became for popular after the 90s as more airlines were offering 1/2 week holidays instead of going for a few days. This impacted the UK tourism industry as there was more income coming into the UK as people preferred longer holidays to shorter breaks.
  • Channel Tunnel opening

    Channel Tunnel opening
    The channel tunnel is one of the largest engineering projects within the UK. The tunnel took 5 years to complete with more then 13,000 workers from England and France. The tunnel channel is one of the longest tunnels in the world as it is 31.5 miles from Folkstone to Calais. 4.5 million UK tourists use the channel tunnel every year with 1.6 million trucks transporting various goods between the UK and other countries. This impacted the UK massively as tourists could now go to and from France.
  • EasyJet launched

    EasyJet launched
    EasyJet was founded by Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou to offer low cost flights to travellers in Europe. EasyJet also opened their first headquarters in Luton Airport. On the 23rd October EasyJet booked its first ever booking at the telephone reservation centre. EasyJets advertising method was the caption "Make flying as affordable as a pair of jeans", this caption made sense as the flights were £29 one way. This impacted the UK tourism massively as people were on a budget were now able to fly.
  • Teletext

    Teletext
    Teletext was brought onto televisions in 2001, this is where holidays were now advertised on tv instead of only at travel agents. People booked holidays on their televisions by pressing a button on their remote. This impacted the UK tourism as people no longer needed to travel to travel agents just to book a holiday and they could do it at home instead.
  • 9/11 Terrorist Attack

    9/11 Terrorist Attack
    This terrorist attack caused long term damage to the tourism industry as they saw a decline in visitors. In 2000 there were 6.8 million visitors in NYC but in 2001 there were only 5.7 million. It took NYC almost 5 years to build their tourism levels back up after the attack. This impacted the UK and USA tourism massively as although the numbers of people flying dropped the place of 9/11 then became a massive tourism attraction years after.
  • Indian Ocean Earthquake and Tsunami

    Indian Ocean Earthquake and Tsunami
    On 26th December 2004 there was an undersea earthquake that caused damage to 14 different countries. These countries included Indonesia, India and Thailand. The estimated cost for damages was $508 million. Many tourist travelling to these countries at the time were also cught in the tsunami. This impacted the UK tourism as no one was visiting any of the effected countries as they were scared, meaning all flights to these countries were constantly cancelled due the to low amount of passenegers.
  • TripAdvisor was launched

    TripAdvisor was launched
    The app TripAdvisor was launched in 2010. TripAdvisor is now the worlds largest travel website with approximately one billion visitors a year. TripAdvisor offers online hotel reservations, bookings for transportation, lodging, travel experiences and restaurants. TripAdvisor impacted the UK tourism as people were now more aware of activities, lodging and travel experiences around the world.
  • Same sex marriage was legalised in the UK

    Same sex marriage was legalised in the UK
    On the 2rd of March 2014 same sex marriage was legalised within the UK. This meant that while people of the same sex were getting married in the UK they would go to tourist destinations either within the UK or around the world therefore boosting the UK economy and tourism business. As same sex marriage was legalised same sex couples felt more influenced to travel around the UK, this boosted different areas economies slowly but steadly.
  • Instagram impacting more travellers

    Instagram impacting more travellers
    A survey made in 2015 determined how much the Instagram made an impact on the number of people going abroad. The survey showed that 48% of users were using Instagram to choose their next holiday destination and 35% of users were using the app to discover new destinations. By 2018, #travel was the third top search and by the end of 2019 the #travel had been used over 465 million times. This impacted the UK travel industry as more people were now aware of new destinations around the world.
  • Queen Elizabeths death

    Queen Elizabeths death
    Queen Elizabeth of England died on 8th September 2022. Her death impacted the entire world and brought mass tourism to the UK and specifically to London as that is where her funeral took place. Around 1 million people from around the world came to the streets of London for the Queens funeral. The Queens funeral was held in Westminster Abbey and 2,000 people travelled there to pay respects. This impacted the UK travel industry as a million people visited the UK to pay respects and brought money.
