    England was ruled by the Tutors in this time period, 1485 to 1603. They believed in divine right and they also cooperated with Parliment. Later on Elizabeth l takes the throne.

    Elizabeth l dies and James l, the first stuart monarch takes the throne. He ended up he was lecturing Parliament about divine right.This later on lead the leaders of the House of Commons to resisit James l claims on absolute power

    Charles l then took the throne. James l, his father knew how to properaly act as an absolute monarch, and James followed in his footsteps.

    Soon, the Parliament forced Charles to sign the Petition of Right. The purpose of this was to stop Charles from raising taxes and jailing others with out any proof of the crime. The next time he wanted to do this he would need the Parliment's consent.

    Charles l signed the Petition of Right but for 11 years he ignored the Parliment. He dissolved the Parliment and completely ignored the rules of the petition that he signed. This caused him to have enemies and one of those poeple being Puritans.

    Charles and Laud tried to put in place the Anglican prayer book on Scotland. This caused the Calvinists to revolt, so to put in all under control, Charles l turned to the Parliment for some money as help.

    In 1640, the Parliment start a revolt of their own. The Parliment went on to execute others close to Charles. They said nothing Chalres l wants cant be fulfilled with their consent. This went on until 1653.

    By this time, Charles l was under the rule of Parlimentary forces. Oliver Cromwell defeated the Cavaliers in a large amount of battles shortly before this and started up a "New Model Army" for the Parliment

    A cold day in January when is the execution of Charles l took place. He made a small announcement right before the act was conmpleted. This was the first time a ruler had been executed by his own people, which caused lots of others shock.

    The Parliment was found passing new laws. Catholics were no longer allowed to own land west of Ireland. If this law was to be broken, whoever committed the crime would be killed.

    Problems of order started to grow stonger, the title Lord Protector was passed onto Cromwell. After that he ruled as a virtual dictator through the army.

    Charles had a brother James ll. James ll took the throne in 1685. Jame ll was open out his Catholic faith and many people were scared that James would restore the Roman Catholic Church.

    In 1638 parliamentary leaders brought in James' Protestant daugher. Mary's husband, William III of Orange, ended up becomming leaders of England.

    William and Mary had to accept the English Bill of Rights, which were acts passed by the Parliemt. They had to do this in order to be crowned. The whole point of the English Bill of Rights was to ensure that the Pariment had power over the monarchy.
