Ise Bay, Japan

Jan 18, 1586

Brought on by earthquake with magnitude 8.2. Wave stretched 6m high. This tsunami caused over 8 thousand deaths and a lot of damage to towns nearby.

Nankaido, Japan

Oct 28, 1707

Caused by an earthquake of 8.4. Waves up to 25 meters. About 30,000 buildings were damaged. 30,000 people died in this tsunami.

Lisbon, Portugal

Nov 1, 1755

Brought on by earthquake with magnitude 8.5. Waves up to 3 meters high. Killed up to 60,000 people.

Ryuku Islands, Japan

Apr 24, 1771

Brought on by an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4. Caused most serious damage to islands of Ishigaki and Miyako. Waves about 11-15 m high. Tsunami killed about 12,000 people and destroyed a total of 3,137 houses.

Northern Chile

Aug 13, 1868

This tsunami resulted from two earthquakes, both with 8.5 magnitudes. Waves reported to be up to be 21 m high. Damages estimated around 300 million dollars.

Krakatau, Indonesia

This tsunami is brought on by the explosion of a volcano. Killed around 40,000 total people. 2,000 deaths from eruption alone.

Aleutian Islands, Alaska

Apr 1, 1946

This tsunami in Alaska was caused by an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8. Killed over 165 people. Caused over 126 million $ of damages.

Papua New Guinea

Jul 17, 1998

This tsunami was triggered by an underwater landslide which was brought on by an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1. Killed around 2,183 people. Occurred about 25 km from the coastline.

Started by an earthquake with a magnitude of 9.1. The tsunami reached about 50 metes tall. Resulted in 10 billion dollars worth of damages.

Traveling 800 kmph this tsunami wave killed over 18,000 people with waves over 10 meters high. Caused by earthquake with magnitude of 8.0.
