    -Constructed between the
    years of 1863-1869.
    -1,907 miles long.
    -Established a mechanical transcontinental transportation network that revolutionized the settlement and economy of the American West.

    1880’s Cattle Drive
    -Large herd driven from Texas to Missouri
    -Herd was driven by “Cowboys”
    -Cowboys were mostly made up of Civil war veterans or immigrants straight from europe
    4,000,000 cattle were driven north from 1866-1888
  • 1870’s Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane

    1870’s Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane
    -Wild Bill Hickok was born on May 27th, 1937.
    -Was mainly known as a lawman, but also was a gunfighter and a gambler.
    -Murdered by Jack McCall on August 2, 1876.
    -Calamity Jane was an American frontiers woman and Bill Hickok’s acquaintance.
    -She was born May 1st, 1852. Died August 1st, 1903.

    -Was a mail ordering service that benefitted the west
    Instead of building/creating goods they could be ordered
    -Easiest way to obtain furniture and other necessities
    -Modernized west long before the East
    -Connected west to Trans Continental Railroad

    Chicago and San Fran. Packing Industry
    -The Union Stock Yard & Transit Co. was a meat packing industry in Chicago.
    -The working conditions were not good at all
    -Owned and operated by a group of railroad companies
    -Packed meat from the cattle drive
    and shipped it to the east.
  • Chief Joseph -- Nez Pierce

    Chief Joseph -- Nez Pierce
    -Was the leader of the tribe called Wallowa, of Nez Pierce. (Oregon Lands)
    -Their band was driven out of their land by the United States Federal Government.
    -Went on a 1,170 mile fighting retreat, later to be known as the Nez Pierce War.
  • Decline of Buffalo

    -Decline was due to both natural and anthropogenic forces
    -Men started killing more buffalo to clear space and take the land
    -This decreased the amount of buffalo by a tremendous amount
    By the 1880’s there were only about 1,100 left
