He also had lost the bank war to get the banks chartered so that the banks would not close. Andrew Jackson was one of the most important until Abraham Lincoln had taken office decades later.

    Abraham Lincoln becomes President

    Abraham Lincoln was one of the most important president's in history because he wanted to abolish slavery and he had accomplished that by passing the Emancipation Proclamation. He had lead the country through the Civil War and during the beginning part of the reconstruction of the South because he was assassinated in Ford's Theater by John Wilkes Booth on April 14, 1865.

    The American Civil War was a conflict about the issue of slavery between the North and South that resulted in a war that had begun with the South attacking Fort Sumter. The war had lasted for 4 years until Lee surrendered to Grand at Appomattox Courthouse in 1865. Several months later, Congress had passed the 13th Amendment that had permanently banned slavery in the United States.

    The Battle of Gettysburg was a major win for the Union because the Confederacy never had the resources or manpower to make such a big push into Union territory again. After the fighting had stopped on June 3rd, 51,000 people were dead, missing, or injured out of 150,000 men that were fielded on both sides of the battle.
