    Gorbachev is elected as President of the USSR. He used the policies of "glasnost" and "perestroika" ( 'openness' and 'reconstruction') to reform the current political system in the Societ Union and eventually end the Cold War. He resigned in 1991 as the Soviet Union crumbled into several smaller countries, including Ukraine. Many think this is because of many reforms or changes to the government that Gorbachev put into effect. Ukraine declared independence from the USSR in August of 1991.

    Ukraine declares independence from the Soviet Union and becomes their own country. The first presidental election after they broke away from the USSR was o n December 1. Leonid Makarovych Kravchuk became President on December 5.

    The Ukrainian president is accused of being involved in a number a crimes, including kidnap. A tape is uncovered that was plantedin his office that confirms accusations. The US and other countries get involved and uncovered an alleged transfer of "Kol'chuha," a Ukrainian defence system to Saddam Hussein. This greatly impacted US-Ukraine relations, and Ukraine became closer with Russia. Later, Ukrainian troops were sent to help US troops in Iraq and US-Ukrainian relations have been better since.
