  • White Primary Abolished

    White Primary Abolished
    The White Primary denied all african americans the right to vote in primary elections.
  • Brown v Board of Education

    Brown v Board of Education
    The Brown family was upset because their daughter had to walk several miles to catch the "Colored" bus in order to get to school. After taking it to court several times they finally won. After that the court ruled that "Separate but Equal" was unconstitutional and ruled that all Georgia public schools be integrated.
  • 1956 GA State Flag Changed

    1956 GA State Flag Changed
    In 1956 the GA state flag was changed to include the Confederate battle flag. This was very controversial from the beginning.
  • Sibley Commision

    Sibley Commision
    The Sibley Commision was created in 1960 and was made to study the issues of integrating GA's schools. After interviewing many people they discovered that most whites would rather close the schools rather than integrate. Soon after the Governor decided that he would let the local school boards decide.
  • SNCC Founded

    SNCC Founded
    SNCC (Student Non-Violent Coordination Committee) was founded in April of 1960. SNCC was formed to coordinate and publicize sit-ins.
  • Integration of UGA

    Integration of UGA
    In 1961 Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter became the first two african amercan students at UGA. Holmes later went on to become an orthopedist, and Hunter later became a famous journalist.
  • Albany Movement

    Albany Movement
    The purpose of the Albany Movement was to desegregate all of Albany, GA. during the protest 500+ people were jailed including MLK. The Albany Movement is considered a failure because there was no immediate change in Albany, although it shaped later protests.
  • Medgar Evers Assassinated

    Medgar Evers Assassinated
    On June 12th, 1963 Medgar Evers was shot and killed in his driveway after returning home from a NAAPC meeting.
  • March on Washington

    March on Washington
    200,000+ people marched from the Washington Monument to the Lincoln Memorial. The purpose of the march was to pressure Congress to pass the Civil Rights Act. During this march MLK gave his famous "I Have a Dream" speach.
  • MLK Assassinated

    MLK Assassinated
    On April 4th, 1964 Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on his hotel balcony by James Earl Ray.
  • Lester Maddox Elected

    Lester Maddox Elected
    Lester Maddox was elected Governor of GA in 1967. During his time as governor he appointed more african americans to governent positions than any other governor combined, this was unusual because Maddox was a segrogationist. Maddox is famous for holding "Little People Days" in the capitol building. He is infamous for refusing to lower the flags at the capitol building when MLK's body was being brought through.
  • Maynard Jackson Elected

    Maynard Jackson Elected
    In 1973 Maynard Jackson was elected as the mayor of ATL. This made his the first african american mayor of ATL also this made his the first african american mayor of a major southern city.During his three terms he helped bring the 1996 Olympics to ATL and added an international wing to the ATL Airport.
  • Andrew Young Elected

    Andrew Young Elected
    Andrew Yong was elected as mayor of ATL in 1981. Throughout his life he was elected to the US House of Representatives, was the 1st african american from GA in Congress since Reconstruction, became a US ambassador for the United Nations, and served as mayor of ATL for 2 terms.
