United States growing role timeline

  • Proclamation of Neutrality

    George Washington gave the proclamation of neutrality in order to refrain the US from getting in the middle of two countries at war.
  • XYZ Affair

    While John Adams was president, the US sent two diplomats to France to meet with French officials, but the French Prime Minister sent diplomats to demand money before meeting with them. This angered the Americans and led to an undeclared war know as the Quasi-War.
  • Convention of 1800

    Following the XYZ affair and the Quasi "war," this treaty restored peace between America and France.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    Thomas Jefferson purchased land from Napoleon Bonaparte which removed France's presence in the territory and more than doubled the size of the US.
  • Embargo Act of 1807

    Put a halt to trade between the US and Great Britain and France while Great Britain and France were at war. This put a big toll on the US's economy
  • War of 1812

    Britain would take American sailors off of their ships and forcefully make them fight in the British navy which caused war to break out between the countries and they fought in America. The white house was burned down and many Americans were infuriated with Britain and had a lot of pride for AMerica.
  • Treaty of Ghent

    Ended War of 1812 and restored territory to rightful owners.
  • Monroe Doctrine

    Given by James Monroe, and basically stated that America would not accept European affairs in the US and the US was closed to further colonization.
