  • Procalamtion of Neutrality

    President Washington was not fond of forming alliances with other nations, therefore he created this proclamation of neutrality in order to keep us from getting in the middle of the conflict between the two warring nations.
  • XYZ Affair

    President John Adams encountered a foreign issue and in effort to diffuse the tensions between the US and France, he sent two American diplomats to meet with French officials. The French foreign minister sent three agents (designated "X", "Y", and "Z" by Americans) to demand the payment of money from the Americans before French officials would agree to meet with them.
  • Convention of 1800

    It was also known as the "Treaty of Mortefontaine" and was a treaty between the US and France to settle the hostility that erupted during the Quasi-War.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    The Lousiana Purchsae was a land deal between the US and France, in which the US acquired approximately 827,000 square miles of land west of the Mississippi River for $15 million.
  • Embargo Act

    This act imposed a general embargo that made any and all exports from the US illegal. It was sponsored by President Jefferson, and was enacted by the US to stop trade between the two warring nations: France and Great Britain. Consequentely, it took a toll on the Amerian economy and did more harm than good.
  • War of 1812

    In 1812 President Madison was faced with a foreign crisis, American sailors were being taken off their ships and were being forced into the British Navy service, this was known as "impressment". American leaders did not like this and with the help of the War Hawks sought war against England.
  • Treaty of Ghent

    The Treaty of Ghent was the peace treaty that ended the War of 1812 between the US and the United Kingdom. It ended the war without presenting gains for either side. It returned to each side the territory it had possessed before the war and said nothing about impressments. Also called the "Second War for Independence".
  • Monroe Doctrine

    The Monroe Doctrine was issued by James Monroe, the president at the time. It stated that the US would not tolerate European Intervention in the affairs of any indpenedent nations in the Americas. It also stated that the Americas were no longer open to colonization and that the US would view such attempt as acts of aggression.
