1516-1776 (events)
Spanish navigator Juan Diaz de Solis killed by indigenous people while exploring the Rio de la Plata, this discouraging further European colonization for more than 100 years. Spanish take over Uruguay from the Portuguese many indigenous people are killed during this. When the fighting calms down Uruguay rebels raise up and overthrow the Spanish taking their land back. -
1828-1915 (war for independence)
Brazil and Argentina claim territory which later becomes the eastern Republic of Uruguay. The constitution gets approved. Over time a political war breaks out between the Blancos (whites) conservative party and the Colorados (reds) liberal party, this following a war between Paraguay which gets defeated. President system gets replaced with a council. -
1962 - 2002 (Dictatorship,guerrilla warfare and democracy)
Many important Uruguay political leaders are kidnapped by Tupamaros guerrillas and held for months on end. Many fighting erupts in Uruguay. -
2002-2004 (Financial crisis)
Emergency measures, including tax increases, are announced by President Batlle in an effort to prevent Argentina's financial crisis from spilling over the border. World Bank approves loans worth more than $250m. -
2009-2012 (Dictators jailed)
All Uruguay dictators jailed, former president jailed for murder and many other violations. Abortion and the smoking of marijuanan is decriminalized.
