    President John Adams sent two American diplomats to meet with French officials. France sent 3 agents (X,Y,Z) to demand payment for meeting. The diplomats refused and America was angry with the French
  • Convention of 1800

    The relationship between France and the United States were less than friendly until a peace agreement was signed.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    Thomas Jefferson purchased Louisiana Territory from Napolean of France. This $15 billion purchase doubled the size of America and Napolean justified it by saying that he was doing what was right for the county.
  • The Embargo Act of 1807

    Stopped trade between the United States and France and Great Britain. It was a disaster for the American economy. Created an economic hardship in the U.S.
  • The Treaty of Ghent

    Ended war without presenting any gains for either side. Returned to each side the territory it passed before the war and said nothing of impressment. America gained respect for being able to defend their country. Considered the "Second War of Independence"
  • The Monroe Doctrine

    James Monroe made a doctrine that stated that United States would not tolerate European intervention in the affairs of any independent nation in the Americas. It also stated that the Americas were no longer open to further colonization and that the United States would view such attempts as an act of aggression.
